Against the backdrop of a wet-mesic upland forest surrounded by natural wetlands, this client dreamt of constructing the ultimate gesture of repose and relaxation inspired by their travels. Here, a Japanese teahouse was designed to rest atop an enveloping koi pond, and surrounded by a rolling stream. The massage room and bath open up onto a panorama of peaceful gardens, waterfalls, and large colorful koi passing below in the clear, calm waters. The terraced deck entrance bridging over the stream is punctuated by a traditional wash basin that was hand carved on-site. Walking paths connect the various features and locations, including benches that offer unique, contemplative vignettes of the landscape. Stepping stones lead through a shallow lily garden where fish dart silently below. A stone bridge leads off the path and onto a traditional Japanese island garden. The utmost care was taken to minimize the impact to the beautifully mature forest and wetlands. Construction was managed to see that every effort was made to preserve the site’s health and function. Excavation was done by hand, and roots were dug around (and under) to route the utilities. Large boulders were precisely set and carved to receive the teahouse’s structural posts so that it’s perimeter balcony could extend over the water. No place went without consideration and care to achieve purposeful repose and the communing of nature.
We are fortunate to have a great team of people who work very hard to ensure we continually exceed our client’s expectations.
